10 Skills Needed to Start an Online Business (Make Money Online) "How to make money online" is probably one of the most popular searches on the internet today. The pandemic pushed many of us to explore the possibility of creating a side hustle or even a full-time source of income without leaving the comfort and safety of our homes. The Internet changed the way we lived even before the turn of the century. We learn, shop, sell, search, do business, get entertained, post snapshots, connect with people, express our opinions and of course make money doing it. Today I'm just going to talk about the last one I mentioned, and that's making money online. And as I promised in the title, I will stick to the SIMPLE skills to learn how to make money online. Although there are many marketable skills you can learn either through paid or free online courses that can open doors for you to lucrative careers. Let's check them out!. The 10 Easiest Skills to Learn to Make Money Online 1. Web scraping and data logging. Apart from diligence and attention to detail, all you need for the job is a rudimentary knowledge of using MS Office (Word, Excel, etc.) or the equivalent in Google Drive and other open sources. And, of course, the knowledge of surfing the web (duh!). Web scraping is a simple process where you conduct online surveys for customers and collect data on a spreadsheet. Several companies collect information about their target markets, such as contact numbers, contacts, websites, Linkedin and other social media accounts, etc. This enables them to send business proposals, even customized ones, to the right person. You don't need a college degree to master this skill. In fact, even high school dropouts can make a living from computer coding. Potential Earnings: $100 and up for a one-time job, $15 – $25 per hour for continuous work. 2. Creative writing. If you have the knack for wordsmithing, you can certainly make a living at it. You learn this skill in grade school and just keep honing it as you climb the academic ladder. So by the time you got your high school diploma, you should be able to compose essays and other literary pieces with ease. From that point on, there are many ways to improve your writing skills, such as taking courses, reading books and other publications, watching online tutorials, and of course, practicing. Once you achieve a certain skill level, there are many opportunities waiting for you online or even outside of the virtual setting. Just to name a few possibilities, you can earn money by writing: 1. Articles for magazines, blogs and other platforms. 2. Product descriptions. 3. Paid reviews. 4. Sales and marketing communique. 5. Content in social media. 6. Novels, short stories. and other literary pieces. Potential Earnings: $5,000/month or more for native English speakers; $2000/month and up for others. 3. Proofreading and editing. Writing skills are of course a prerequisite for this job. It's like you can't correct a swimmer's stroke without knowing how to swim the right way yourself. Proofreading itself is just spotting and correcting spelling, typographical and grammatical errors in someone's work. Editing can involve rewriting sentences or even paragraphs to improve readability, remove redundancies, and fix the flow of thoughts and ideas. Although the two may be different from each other, they overlap in a way. So when someone hires you to do one or the other, they can always expect you to do both. Potential Earnings: $6,000/month or more for native English speakers; $3000/month and up for others 4. Front-end web design. You can now become a web designer without knowing a single thing about programming. Website building platforms like WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, etc. made it easier for everyone now to plant a stake in cyberspace. Instead of coding, everything is almost just drag-and-drop tasks. In layman's terms, as a front-end designer, all you need to do is make a website pretty. Today, you can do it without knowledge and skills in Photoshop or Illustrator. Instead, you can just use Canva to create images and other design elements for your website. You can download a basic account for free and learn how to use it from several tutorials readily available online. If you need images to make pages more visually appealing, various sites offer free downloadable images such as Pexel, Pixabay and Unsplash. Potential Earnings: $1000 per website and up. 5. Graphic design. A graphic designer is one of the most in-demand jobs online. If you have an eye and talent for design and illustration, it should be easy for you to decide to learn how to use Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. And it is also important to install AdobeSuite on your computer. Graphic designers are always in demand as powerful images appeal more to consumers than just text. All companies require artwork of one kind or another from establishing corporate identity (logos, branding, etc.) to marketing their products or services (website, brochures, etc.) to reaching consumers (advertisements, promotions, etc.). If you are creative, passionate and skilled in design, you can make a mark in this field even if you don't have a college degree in art or visual communication. Potential Earnings: $2,000 and up per project, $60,000 a year or more for a full-time job. 6. Blogging. Blogging is actually more of a way to be your own boss. So unless you have rich parents, or significant savings to support yourself for at least two years, this is not something you can do full time right away. It's best to start blogging as a hobby while also having a full-time job. However, most of the skills you need to blog can also be good sources of income such as creative writing, front-end web design, or pretty much everything I've mentioned above. What makes blogging one of the most lucrative ways to make money online is the potential to earn passive income in the long run. And you have several opportunities to create income streams, for example: 1. Affiliate marketing. 2. Advertisements. 3. Sponsored Posts. 4. Paid reviews. 5. Sell products and services. 6. Sell digital products. 7. Offer online courses. Potential Income: Successful full-time bloggers today earn between $2000/month. to $100,000/mo. 7. Marketing in social media. Most people today rely on their mobile devices as their main source of communication, information and entertainment. And most, if not all, of these users are registered on at least one of the many social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. They also have regular access to Google and YouTube. It's either you become an influencer yourself (which takes time, effort and creativity to achieve such a status), or you can offer your skills to companies or blog owners to increase their social media presence. Some freelancers charge $300 per month per client just to manage one social media account like Pinterest, Facebook, etc. If you can develop exceptional skills in this area, your income prospects are good. Potential Earnings: $3,000/month and up. 8. Vlogging. Many people today make money by vlogging about travel adventures, cooking, fashion finds, etc. If you are not inclined to write or design, but instead have the gift of gab, then you should start vlogging. Even if you're more of an introvert, you can still create interesting YouTube content using video creation and editing software and online sources for free video and audio clips. The trick here is to get a massive following that will make your content attractive to sponsors and advertisers. Or again, you can market this skill to companies that want to have a viral video on the internet to promote their services or goods and build brand awareness. It intrigued me to hear about 3 or 4 foreigners who create different YouTube content focusing on the Philippines alone, its people, destinations, etc. These guys quickly gained hundreds of thousands or even millions of Filipino followers worldwide in a short period of time and are now earning $3000 to $6000 per month online. Potential Earnings: $3,000/month and up. 9. Teaching English as a second language. Of course, you have a slight advantage if you are a native English speaker. But even if you are not, you can still make money doing this if you have a good command of the English language in spoken communication. The demand for this service from rich Asian countries such as China, Japan and South Korea, as well as in other countries in Europe and the Middle East increases every year. Don't worry, it is not necessary for you to learn the language of the countries I mentioned. Employers like VIP Kid will provide you with a complete lesson plan in addition to allowing students to teach online. Potential Earnings: $4,000/month and up for native English speakers; $2000/month or more for others. 10. Transcription. Transcribing audio transcriptions is one of the many work from home jobs available on the market. This is one of the easiest marketable skills you can develop to make money online. However, it requires sharp hearing and the ability to understand different nuances in speech. The job involves transcribing audio files such as interview transcripts, dictations, dialogues, oral reports, etc. into word documents. Although most of this field consists of general transcription, some tasks require specialisation. Like for example, if you are going to do medical transcriptions, you need to be familiar with common terminologies that doctors use. Potential Income: $2000/month and up. Conclusion. One thing I really love about cyberspace is that it is not only a place to make money, but it is also a place to LEARN how to make money. There is a treasure trove of free and paid training programs that allow you to learn new marketable skills that will help you qualify for various real and virtual jobs, or better yet, be your own boss.
